BIOGRAPHY
Scott van Ooyen is a graduate from The Ohio State University with a BS degree in Aviation Engineering 1987. While attending Ohio State, he was heavily involved in student organizations. As a member of AHP, Scott was the chapter Historian and President. Under his leadership the Omicron Sigma Upsilon Chapter pledged over 50 members in 1986. Scott was also a member and team captain for the OSU Flight Team. He was Region III Top Pilot in 1986 and was national preflight champion at the 1987 NIFA SAFECON.
Upon graduation, Scott flew Dornier 228 and EMB-120 Brasilia for the Midway Connection for 4 years. After Midway Airlines’ demise in 1991, he flew for Air Wisconsin Airlines for a short term as a first officer in the De Havilland Canada DHC-8. In 1993, Scott was hired at Southwest Airlines where he currently is a Captain/Check Airman in the Boeing 737 based out of Baltimore, MD.
Currently living in Columbus, Ohio, Scott is very active with Ohio State’s Department of Aviation and the OSU Flight Team. Scott was Head Coach of the OSU Flight Team 1997-2007 and was awarded Coach of the Year at the 1999 NIFA SAFECON. He still is involved with the flight team helping fund raise and working with the preflight team and landing events. Scott has been the advisor four times for Ohio State as they hosted the national SAFECON in 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2011.
